Dehydrated Vegetable
Potato Flakes & Powder
Pre-cooked starch base for snacks, bakery and instant mash

Introduction
About our potato flakes & powder
Potato is the quiet workhorse of the dehydrated vegetable family. Where onion and garlic sell on flavour, potato sells on function: its cooked, gelatinised starch binds water, builds body and carries texture in an enormous range of products, from extruded snack pellets to gluten-free bakery mixes. If a recipe needs structure, thickness or a soft, moist crumb, potato is often the simplest natural answer.
Driedland Foods and Spice manufactures both forms of the ingredient. Potato flakes are the instant-mash format — thin dried sheets of cooked potato that fluff back into mash with hot water, and the raw material of choice for fabricated chips and pellet snacks. Potato powder is the same cooked base milled fine, integrating invisibly into doughs, batters, soups and coatings where texture should be felt rather than seen.
The starch is the story in both. Cooking gelatinises potato starch, and careful drying preserves it in that pre-cooked state — which is why the flakes rehydrate in moments and the powder thickens and binds instantly, without the raw, pasty note of uncooked starches. This behaviour makes the line a natural binder in cutlets and patties, an economical thickener in gravies, and a moisture manager in breads and flatbreads.
Choosing between the forms is usually a texture decision. Flakes deliver the fluffy, discrete-particle character instant mash and snack pellets want; powder gives the smoothest, fastest-integrating result in doughs and coatings. Many buyers run both, and because they share a base, flavour stays identical across the pair.
Product Family
The sub-products we supply in this line
Each potato flakes & powder sub-product below comes from one shared raw-material base, so flavour stays identical while the cut changes.

Potato Flakes
The instant-mash and snack-pellet format, pre-cooked and ready to fluff.
Potato Powder
Fine-milled cooked potato that binds and thickens invisibly in doughs and batters.
Key Benefits
Why food manufacturers use potato flakes & powder
Instant mash performance
Flakes reconstitute into smooth, fluffy mash in minutes with hot water — no boiling, peeling or mashing in the kitchen.
Natural binding and thickening
Pre-gelatinised starch binds water and ingredients instantly, replacing or reducing synthetic binders in processed foods.
Two textures, one base
Fluffy flake character or smooth powder integration from the same cooked potato, with no flavour mismatch between lines.
Gluten-free formulation base
A naturally gluten-free structure-builder for bakery mixes, snacks and coatings aimed at free-from markets.
Stable, storable, shippable
Converts a bulky, perishable crop into a dry ingredient with predictable logistics on any export route.
Applications
Where this ingredient is used
Snack pellets and fabricated chips
Flakes are a primary raw material in potato-based pellets, stacked chips and extruded snacks.
Instant mash and side dishes
Food service and retail instant mash formats built directly on flake reconstitution.
Binder in patties and cutlets
Powder binds vegetable and meat mixtures in patties, kebabs, nuggets and croquettes.
Bakery and flatbreads
Softens crumb and extends freshness in breads, buns, parathas and gluten-free formulations.
Soups, gravies and curries
Thickens and adds body in dry soup mixes, instant gravies and heat-and-eat meals.
Coatings and batters
Improves adhesion and crispness in batter and breading systems for fried and oven products.
Industries Served
Sectors we supply this product to
Potato is bought for what it does rather than how it tastes, so buyers here are typically technologists solving a texture, binding or mash problem.

Packaging, Storage & Shelf Life
Getting the product to you in the condition you expect
Packaging
- Multi-wall paper bags or laminated woven sacks with food-grade liner, typically 20–25 kg
- Lined cartons for flakes where crush protection matters in transit
- Retail packs under private label programmes
- Custom pack weights, liners and labelling as per buyer requirement
Storage
Store in a cool, dry, pest-controlled warehouse below 25 °C, off the floor and away from walls. Keep packs sealed; like all starch-rich products, potato absorbs ambient moisture and odours if left open.
Shelf Life
Typically 12–24 months from production in unopened original packing. Starch-rich products are among the more stable lines we make, so warehouse humidity rather than age usually limits usable life.
Quality
How quality is controlled
Each lot is checked against the agreed specification for colour, form integrity, moisture and reconstitution behaviour before dispatch.
Potatoes are inspected at intake and sorted; greened, damaged or sprouted tubers are rejected because they directly affect finished colour and taste.
Sieving, magnetic separation and metal detection are standard finishing steps, with pre-shipment lot samples available to buyers.
Our quality process page explains the full approach across all products.
Manufacturing
How it is made
- Selected potatoes are washed, peeled, trimmed and inspected before processing.
- Prepared potatoes are cooked to gelatinise the starch, then dried under controlled conditions that protect colour and function.
- The dried material is finished as flakes or milled to powder and sieved to the agreed band.
- Both forms pass magnetic separation and metal detection before sealing into lined export packaging.
FAQs
Potato Flakes & Powder — frequently asked questions
What is the difference between potato flakes and potato powder?
Form and texture, not flavour. Flakes are dried sheets of cooked potato that fluff into mash and carry structure into snack pellets; powder is the same base milled fine for smooth integration into doughs and batters. Both are pre-cooked.
Are your flakes suitable for instant mash?
Yes — instant mash is the defining flake application. Reconstitution guidance ships with samples; typical practice is hot water or milk added to flakes with brief standing, no boiling required.
What is the difference between potato powder and potato starch?
Potato powder is whole cooked potato — starch, fibre and flavour together — and tastes like potato. Potato starch is the isolated starch alone, flavour-neutral. For binding with potato character, the powder is the right choice.
Is the line suitable for gluten-free products?
Potatoes are naturally gluten-free, making both forms common bases in free-from bakery and snacks. If you need validated gluten-free status for labelling, discuss certification requirements with us at enquiry.
Can you supply material for snack pellet extrusion?
Yes — extrusion is one of the largest uses of the flake grade. Share your process parameters and target texture, and we will recommend and sample accordingly.
What pack sizes do you ship?
20–25 kg lined sacks and bags are standard for industrial buyers, with lined cartons for flakes and retail formats under private label on request.
